EcoSummit 2016

Ecological Sustainability:Engineering Change

Le Corum, Montpellier, France:  August 29-September 1, 2016

Le Corum, Montpillier, France

ISAER participated in the EcoSummit 2016 held in Montpelier, France and organized by H.T. Odum’s student, William (Bill) Mitsch and several others.

A special session of talks by H.T. Odum’s students was organized by Bill Mitsch and there was an award ceremony at which Elsevier honored the contributions of H.T. Odum and Sven Jorgensen to the fields of ecological research presented at the EcoSummit. Betty Odum gave an excellent acceptance speech for the award that H.T. Odum received.

The Odum special session at this meeting featured a talk on environmental accounting using emergy given by Dan Campbell along with talks by Bill Mitsch, Bob Knight, Pat Kangas, Bob Costanza, and other former students of H.T. Odum. Campbell's talk was the only one in this session that carried on Odum's work on emergy. Mark Brown was not able to attend, since he was headed for China to teach a short course.

ISAER sponsored a session on Agricultural Ecology at the EcoSummit 2016 conference that was organized by Aurelie Wilfart and Olivier Le Corre, who did an excellent job assembling a good group of speakers on the topic. Excellent talks were given by Executive Council members, Simone Bastianoni and Elliott Campbell, as well as the other speakers in this session.

ISAER sponsored a table at the EcoSummit 2016, where we displayed our literature, i.e., the Emergy Synthesis volumes, Environment, Power and Society for the 2st Century and other publications and answered questions about emergy and the Society from those who visited our table. We gave away a brochure about ISAER at the table that was created by Dan Zhu and Dan Campbell as a way to introduce our Society to the attendees of the EcoSummit.

Bob Knight, an Odum student and good friend displayed his latest book at our table and it received a great deal of interest. This helped us attract people, because our materials were late arriving at the conference due to a shipping error. We sold memorabilia and at the end of the conference gave the remaining items away to build good will in the community. The table was overseen by Smiti Nepal and we received help from Ana Fonseca, Enrique Ortega, Mariana Oliveira and others who stopped by, to whom we are grateful.
